Nationalism vs. Globalism

Many of us are concerned about the growing divide in the country and in the world right now. The new political divide can be summed up as Nationalism vs Globalism. The Brits voting for the Brexit or the Americans electing Donald Trump and other populist political movements are riding on Nationalism or against Globalism and open borders (for good or bad).

In the TED talk “Nationalism vs globalism: the new political divide” the author Yuval Noah Harari explores why the shift is happening now. When people are insecure and uncertain about their future they tend to clam up and resort back to old ways (Great Again, like in the past). Mr. Harari claims that the issues we face today like terrorism, AI, automation, and environmental crisis are all global in nature, hence cannot be solved by individual nations. Nationalism proponents may not agree with that view.

Recently, Steve Bannon was on 60 minutes and he argues that economic nationalism is what built this country where as many in the mainstream believe that America has always been a nation of immigrants and that is how the American Dream was achieved. The technology giants like Apple, Google and many others were all started by immigrants.

In the end, what is the true nature of the current issues in the country and in the world? Is Nationalism the solution or does it just provides a false sense of security? Is the experiment of globalism like the European Union going to survive or are the Brits going to regret Brexit? Is America going in the right direction? Can you be a Nationalist and also be a Global leader?
