What Should Be The Standards and Criteria For Our Leaders/Politicians?

• What we'll do
We seem to be experiencing a new era in politics. Twitter allows for immediate discourse between government representatives and anyone. So comments are no longer scripted or created by communications professionals. As a result, President Trump comments on anything that angers or intrigues him, including sports, TV news, and especially the media.
Voters are choosing candidates with business experience vs. government experience. But are our nation, states, or cities the same as a business? Aren't our elected officials supposed to be considering the greater good, and not just the bottom line? Shouldn't representatives at all levels of government be representing everyone, not just business interests?
What about ethics violations? We have a president who has been accused by multiple women of sexual assault, and now senators and congressmen are facing similar accusations. Recent accusations against people in the private sector have led to most losing their jobs, contracts, etc. Shouldn't these same standards apply to those in the government?
The special election in Alabama is coming down to deciding in favor of party affiliation instead of choosing the candidate who did not assault teenage girls while in his thirties. What can we do to demand higher standards? Do we have to stick with the politicians we have until they are up for re-election? Or can we find a way to fire them for ethical reasons or lack of representation?
