3rd Annual Philadelphia International Tango Festival

The Philadelphia Argentine Tango School (http://www.philadelphiatangoschool.com/index.htm) is delighted to announce the 3rd Annual Philadelphia International Tango Festival (http://philadelphiatangofestival.com/), which will take place from May 24 through May 27, 2013. Our most ambitious festival yet, the event features 22 workshops and 5 milongas (tango social dances) with performances by world-renowned tango dancers each night. All of this will take place over the four-day extended Memorial Day holiday weekend.

This year’s festival welcomes two internationally-renowned couples directly from Buenos Aires, Argentina – Javier Antar & Kara Wenham (http://www.todaviatango.com/) and Guillermo Cerneaz & Marina Kenny (http://guillermoymarina.wix.com/tango) – who will teach workshops for intermediate and advanced tango dancers and perform at nightly social dances. Tangueros (tango dancers) from around the United States are planning to travel to Philadelphia to study with these celebrated tango masters.

We also welcome Adam Hoopengardner & Ciko Tanik (http://www.adamandcikotango.com/) of New York City – one of the top tango partnerships in the US – who will teach a special four-day Absolute Beginner Track. The Beginner Track will introduce newcomers to the basics of tango vocabulary, structure, technique and lead-and-follow improvisation, allowing the tango novice to take full advantage of the festival. Everyone is welcome to come learn tango in a laid-back and fun environment since the Beginner Track requires neither previous dance experience, nor a partner. Beginners are welcome to attend nightly social dances to practice what they have learned, meet other tangueros and view performances.

Most festival events will take place in the gorgeous upstairs ballroom at the RUBA Club in Northern Liberties (414 Green Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19123), whose particular mix of elegance and edginess recalls many of the spaces where tango is danced in its city of origin, Buenos Aires. Some events will take place in the newly-renovated studio of the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School (2030 Frankford Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19125), including a Saturday late-night milonga (2-6 am!) hosted by Urban Tango Philadelphia (http://www.urban-tango.com/).

The 3rd Annual Philadelphia International Tango Festival features a superb line-up of DJs, all of whom are much-loved by the tango dancing public, including Evan Griffiths (NYC), Lung-Kuei Lin (Taipei/NYC), Adam Hoopengardner (NYC), Marc Hussner (Philadelphia) and Eva von Esse (Philadelphia). These DJs know how to choose music compelling enough to make your mind forget how much your feet are aching from dancing 12 hours straight in heels! To ease those feet at the beginning of each day, dancers may choose to participate in daily yoga classes taught by Argentine yogi and tango aficionada Monica Moya.

A range of registration options – from a full festival pass, to specific level and day passes, to a milongas-only pass – are available online. Registrants may also choose to purchase individual workshops and milongas online at a discounted pre-registration price. Full-time high school, college, and graduate students receive 20% off any registration option. Pre-registration ends at midnight on Saturday, May 18, after which attendees may pay at the door for classes that have not sold out and for all milongas.

The Philadelphia Argentine Tango School (http://www.philadelphiatangoschool.com/index.htm) recently celebrated five years of offering high-quality instruction in Argentine tango to beginners through professional dancers in Philadelphia. In addition to group and private lessons, the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School offers twice-weekly prácticas, monthly milongas and occasional larger events. We organized the 1st and 2nd Philadelphia International Tango Festivals (2010 and 2012), and have hosted three major tango bands directly from Argentina, Otros Aires (2009), Tanghetto, (2010), and the Alejandro Ziegler Quartet (2012), as well as workshops with many world-renowned tango instructors. In addition to teaching in Philadelphia, our instructors regularly travel to teach and perform worldwide. In the past three years, Philadelphia Argentine Tango School instructors have taught in England, France, Spain, Poland, Russia, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, Canada, and throughout the US. In 2009, School Founder Meredith Klein established a permanent studio in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia.
