The first 4.5 miles follow the dedicated paved bike and pedestrian trail, completely separated from motor traffic. Smooth, scenic, and loaded with history.
- The highlight of this segment is the Mosier Twin Tunnels, two historic tunnels originally built in 1921, widened in the 1930s, then sealed when I-84 was constructed in 1954, and finally reopened in 2000. Riding through their ~390 feet of cool, dimly lit stone is genuinely thrilling, and the archway openings frame stunning river views.
From Mosier, you'll transition onto Historic Highway 30, which you'll share with vehicle traffic. Car traffic here is typically light but stay alert and ride single file. This is where the route earns its challenge rating.
- The road climbs steadily eastward, gaining most of its elevation as it winds up through open, sunbaked terrain with sweeping views back toward Hood River and the river corridor.
- You'll pass the Memaloose Overlook roughly 5.5 miles from Mosier (about 415 feet of climbing to this point), a worthwhile stop for views of Memaloose Island and the Columbia river.
- Continue climbing another mile and a half or so to reach Rowena Crest, the dramatic finale of the ride. The total road section from Mosier to Rowena Crest is approximately 6.5 miles one way with around 650 feet of climbing from the trailhead start.
