Mesa, AZ 85205In July, Mesa and Udine officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a Friendship City relationship. Now, we’re beginning the fun part: creating meaningful programs and exchanges connecting our two communities.
🏰 A Little About Udine
Located in northeastern Italy, Udine is the historic capital of the Friuli region, situated between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps and not far from Venice, Austria and Slovenia. Its location has helped create a fascinating blend of Italian, Venetian, Austrian and Slavic influences.
According to local legend, Attila the Hun had Udine’s castle hill built so he could watch the nearby city of Aquileia burn. Today, the hill offers beautiful views of the city and surrounding mountains—thankfully with a much more peaceful atmosphere!
Udine is known for its elegant Venetian-style architecture, historic piazzas, impressive works by artist Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and a strong regional identity. Many residents speak Friulian in addition to Italian. The surrounding area is also celebrated for its wine, cuisine and the world-famous Prosciutto di San Daniele.
Some of the opportunities our committee is exploring include:
🇮🇹 Exchanges between nursery school teachers focused on learning methods and educational practices
🎬 University exchanges connecting the ASU MIX Center with the University of Udine’s film and media program
🎓 High school student exchanges
🤝 Economic partnerships between businesses in Mesa and Udine
💡 Cultural, travel and language programs inspired by committee membersIf you’re passionate about Italian culture, international travel, language, education, business or connecting people across borders, we would love to have you join us.
Come share your ideas—and enjoy some award-winning Italian gelato—as we begin this exciting new chapter between Mesa and Udine!
