Books with Buxmont - Genre : Contemporary Fiction
Details
I spun the wheel and the genre picked was: Contemporary Fiction
Please feel free to suggest books in the commments. Once we have a good handful amount to choose from I will send out the survey to vote! :)
What is contemporary fiction you ask...?
a genre comprising stories set in the present day or recent past, typically focusing on realistic characters, relatable situations, and modern societal, cultural, or political themes. It often highlights current, everyday life, including technology, relationships, and contemporary issues, generally published from the 1960s to the present.
Key characteristics of contemporary fiction include:
- Setting: Takes place in the modern era or, at most, the recent past.
- Realism: Features situations, events, and characters that could plausibly exist in the real world.
- Relevance: Focuses on current social issues, cultural shifts, and diverse perspectives.
- Theme: Often explores human relationships, personal growth, emotional challenges, or societal dilemmas.
While sometimes overlapping with literary fiction (which often focuses heavily on style and theme), contemporary fiction can cover a wide range of subgenres, including romance, mystery, and family dramas, with an emphasis on believable narratives.
For those who are new to bookclub here are some details about this event...
While we love reading books and discussing we are by no means an intense bookclub. Anyone can participate, even if you couldn't finish the book! We just ask that you at least attempt the book :)
We will bring some questions to help start off and guide the convo, but usually we do go off topic quite often. If you are someone who prefers bookclubs to be more guided and to the book, this may not be the bookclub for you. We just want to be upfront about this.
Please keep an open mind about books that are suggested and we respect different opinions about books. You do not have to like book :)
We choose genres from a list that was created at past bookclubs ( if you have an idea for a genre please let us know! We love different and creative!) We put all the genres in a random picker website and thats how our book genre is selected. It will be announced on the event page. Sometimes as a group we may pick the next genre at the the previous bookclub if it just makes sense timing wise ( ex. Summer bookclub is usually something light and a beach read. If bookclub falls close to a holiday we may choose to go with a theme close to that, etc )
Once we feel we have enough suggestions posted on the event board we will send out a survey to vote. We will ask that you vote ASAP, so we can get a book picked and start reading.
Location - We have been meeting at Huntingdon Valley's Be Well Bakery and Cafe recently (on the bakery side next to the cafe entrance, flower wreath on door ). However we may change location if may a spot fits the theme. :) We usually vote on this as a group when voting for the book choice.
As for when the book club will meet, this will be flexible. We usually like to keep at least a month and 1/2 between meetings. Usually ends up being every other month. We will schedule as we go
