The Tao Te Ching, also spelled Dao De Jing (道德經), is a classic Chinese text attributed to Laozi (老子), an ancient Chinese philosopher. The title can be translated as "The Book of the Way and its Virtue" or "The Classic of the Way and Virtue." It is a foundational text of Taoism, a philosophical and religious tradition that emphasizes living in harmony with the Tao.
The Tao Te Ching consists of 81 short chapters or verses that offer insights and guidance on how to live a virtuous and harmonious life. The text explores the concept of the Tao, which can be understood as the fundamental principle or way that underlies and unifies the universe. The Tao is often described as something formless, eternal, and beyond human comprehension.
Key themes in the Tao Te Ching include the importance of simplicity, humility, spontaneity, and living in accordance with the natural order of things. The text encourages individuals to embrace the concept of wu-wei (無為), often translated as "non-action" or "effortless action," which suggests acting in harmony with the Tao without unnecessary striving or force.
The Tao Te Ching has been highly influential not only within Taoism but also in Chinese Buddhism and Confucianism. It has been translated into numerous languages and continues to be studied and appreciated worldwide for its philosophical and spiritual insights.

In "The Republic," Plato explores the nature of justice, questioning its intuitive definition as well as proposing its true meaning. Through engaging dialogues, he scrutinizes the functions of justice in individual lives and in societal structures. The book proposes a unique vision of an ideal state where philosophers rule as kings, suggesting that true justice can only be realized through wise and moral self-restraint and courageous living.
"The Republic" remains a cornerstone in the study of philosophy, ethics, and political theory, continuously inspiring debates on the best ways to balance morality and governance.
In this particular meetup we will pick up from where we left off in our last session where we focused on Book VII and the famous Allegory of the Cave, and continue our discussion with a look at the different forms of government - the subjects of Books VIII and beginning of Book IX.
Every second Wednesday, Phil will introduce us to works on Language, Psychology, and History.
Welcome to the series "Comprehensivist Wednesdays." Transdisciplinarity, Renaissance humanism, homo universalis, and Polymathy are some of the ways of describing this approach which Buckminster Fuller called Comprehensivity and described as “macro-comprehensive and micro-incisive.”

- Pope Leo XIV & Revival of Digital Catholic Social Teaching with Mark StahlmanLink visible for attendees
in 2022, 52 Living Ideas hosted 10x sessions on DCST -- so far the only place where this discussion has occured. But w/ the election of Pope Leo XIV, named after Leo XIII -- who launched the original "Catholic Social Teaching" in 1891 w/ the encyclical Rerum Novarum -- we will now experience a robust revival of this project. This is the only "plan" w/ both a significant history and wide endorsement aimed at addressing the overall "crisis" in the West. Two-thirds of the College of Cardinal voted for him, so his priorities have now become the Church's priorities. This is potentially a major breakthrough geopolitically, socially, and personally for the whole world -- not just Catholics. - Mark Stahlman
