Movie: On A String

n On a String, Isabel Hagen plays a dryly comic version of herself: a newly graduated Juilliard violist trying to survive in New York on gig work, family friction and a head full of doubt. As her music career refuses to take shape and her more talented brother becomes an unavoidable point of comparison, Isabel is still living at home amid the neurotic rhythms of her family. When her toxic ex Dave, now a cellist with the New York Philharmonic, offers her a possible audition, it looks like exactly the opportunity she has been waiting for — and exactly the disaster she should know to avoid. Winner of the screenplay award at Tribeca, Hagen’s feature debut is a witty, awkward and sharply observed indie about ambition, insecurity and coming of age in a city that leaves little room for figuring things out.
