Wollman Rink in Central Park transforms into a magical winter photography hotspot during its seasonal ice-skating events, offering dynamic photo opportunities amid twinkling lights, festive crowds, and crisp January backdrops.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
Technique Focus: Winter Minimalism & Monochrome Portraiture

• Capture the serenity of snow-draped landscapes, experiment with black-and-white for stark contrasts, and seek out quiet, deserted spots for minimalist compositions.
• Capture the joyful energy of skaters gliding under holiday garlands and the Manhattan skyline, using techniques like slow shutter speeds (1/30s to 1/8s) for motion blur trails that evoke movement and romance.
• Wide-angle lenses (16-35mm) to frame intimate couples against the vast rink and Bethesda Terrace in the distance.
• Experiment with bokeh from string lights via f/1.8 apertures for dreamy portraits.

Post-Event
For those of you who would like to join us afterwards, at approximately 12:45 pm we will meet back at the Wollman Cafe for a drink and/or something to eat. We welcome everyone to join us and share what you've captured and your experience.

PHOTO CHALLENGE
Once this Meetup event ends, we will create an album on the Photos page. Please post up to five (5) of your best photographs from the event before 7 PM (ET) on Thursday, January 22, 2026.

Eligible photos:

• Must be taken on Saturday, January 17th.
• Must be posted before the deadline
• Must have a title
• Must NOT be sexually explicit or suggestive

This album will be reviewed. The winning image will become the permanent album cover of the event. The name of the winning photographer will appear in the album title.
