About us

A COMMUNITY FOR ARTISTIC AND CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY.
Welcome New York to The Art of Photography! Our purpose is to spark creativity, open new doors, incite discussion and learn from each other in a positive and sharing environment. The basis of which is to facilitate the merging of the principles of art and graphic design with excellent camera craft. To take each one of us, no matter what level of experience, to places, levels and worlds that are out of our comfort zone. To grow, to see, to inspire unique visions. Our review/discussion programs, our photo shoots and educational sessions are free. Your submissions for discussion are for you to choose without regard to theme or genre.

The Art of Photography began as a museum art school program in 2002 and has expanded to over 18,000 members worldwide. So many of whom have grown into exceptional photographers that are hugely represented in international award shows. New York, we are truly excited for your participation and look forward to your development as Artistic and Creative Photographers. Be on the lookout for some very exciting photo shoots and presentations that will be posted on an on-going basis. Also join our International Site to check out over 300 photo albums created by our members. Thank you for your interest and good shooting.

The Cloisters, 99 Margaret Corbin Drive, New York, NY, US

Perched above the Hudson in Fort Tyron Park, The MET Cloisters rewards a slow, observational approach--its pink Cuxa marble, carved capitals, vaulted chapels, and stained-glass windows offer some of the richest medieval textures in New York. Casual handheld photography is permitted inside the museum, but tripods, flash, and staged shoots are not, so plan to work mobile and discreetly.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES
Technique Focus: Architectural Repetition & Negative Space

  • The whole museum is built on rhythm--arches, columns, ribbed vaults, herringbone tile.
  • Use graphic minimalism, receding arcades, shadow play.

Human Scale & Storytelling

  • A solitary visitor in a vast medieval space is a classic Cloisters image.
  • Silhouettes against stained glass.
  • Pre-compose in an archway or window. wait for someone to walk into the frame.

The Langon Chapel & Pontaut Chapter House

  • Intimate, dim, vaulted spaces with carved doorways--the most "atmospheric" rooms in the museum.
  • Doorway frame-within-frame. Shoot from outside looking through the carved arch into the lit chamber beyond.
  • Vaulted ceiling. The ribbed vaults make graphic radial compositions.
  • Capital and corbel details. Pick capitals where a window throws raking light across the carving.
