Event Description:

In modern times, we often approach the 12 signs with behavioral keywords. For example, Gemini is about inquisitiveness, whereas Leo is about boisterousness. However, numerous additional traits were once associated to each sign. Studying these lesser-known connections can enrich our interpretations of planets in their respective signs and houses.

The signs were once associated more closely with the directions. For example, all fire signs pointed east, with Sagittarius pointing to the southeast, Leo to the northeast. How can we further unpack the meaning of these directions? What does mean today?

The signs were once assigned to parts of the body. For example, Gemini generally rules the arms, and Pisces generally rules the feet. However, there are additional complexities that are not well known. For example, Mercury in Gemini can also indicate the head. These body correspondences can help each of us map out how we might uniquely experience and relate to our bodies.

The signs also were once more closely connected with environments. Did you know that Leo indicates lush parks whereas Capricorn points to barren fields? When we have a planet in a particular sign, we might discover some of its nature when we go to the types of places that correspond with its sign.

There are additional noise, fertility and aggression designations. For example, the signs boast traditional classifications like fruitful, barren, mute and violent. How did these assignations come about, and how might we use them in a meaningful way in the 21 st century?

Finally, there is the principle of rulership. For example, Aries is ruled by the Mars, bestowing upon this sign a martial quality. Additionally, the Sun is exalted in Aries. And any planet that is in Aries – even if it is not the sun – takes on some solar characteristics.

This talk will introduce how to weave the directions, body, environments, rulerships and other characteristics into holistic and nuanced interpretations of planets in their signs and house.
