The Astrology of the Orphic Hymns

Event Description:

Join us for a talk with Drew Levanti about the connections between the Orphic Hymns and astrology.

The Orphic Hymns are a collection of 87 short religious poems representing a Greek mystery tradition that originated in the 6th and 5th centuries BCE, and influenced thinkers from Plato to Ficino. The hymns formed the backbone of initiation rites designed to guide the devotees to remember their true place in the Cosmos.

This talk will present four of the Orphic Hymns to planetary deities: Selene (Moon), Ares (Mars), Kronos (Saturn), and Apollo (the Sun).

Each hymn offers insight into the planets’ unique characters and their role in the cosmic dance. Special attention will be given to Apollo, whom the Orphics associated with harmonization and the cosmic balance of the equinoxes.

Attendees will come away with deepened gnosis of the planets.

Bio:

Drew Levanti is a consulting astrologer, writer, speaker and teacher exploring the aliveness of time and everydayness of magic. He helps clients and students time important actions and life events with the support of planetary alignments. These topics are at the center of his class, Initiate, which begins again October 29. This expertise also informs Drew's class with Kristin Mathis, STAR: An Orphic Initiation, reviving the Orphic mysteries for today. This class begins September 23.

Drew has spoken at the Northwest Astrology Conference, the Astrological Association Conference, the Queer Astrology Conference, Fresh Voices in Astrology, and the Astrology & Climate Change Conference. His writing has been published in WellBeing Astrology and The Mountain Astrologer. He also teaches in Austin Coppock’s Fundamentals of Astrology courses on astrology and magic.

The meetup takes place at the Theosophical Society, which is next door to the Quest Bookshop. You may enter through the bookshop before 7 pm (when it closes) or to the left of the bookshop after 7 pm.
