What we’re about
Members of this meetup group get hands-on experience creating original images with non-pro tools such as smartphones. We venture out to practice composition; experiment with light and shadow; dive deep into apps and settings; learn about editing; and develop best-practice skills.
# Who, what, why
I’m Joe Gremillion, a hobbyist photographer who uses an iPhone to capture interesting images, which you can see at www.joephotos.art.
Eventually I want to teach creative visualization as a side business, and this meetup is my first foray into teaching the subject. For now there’s no fee, just fun, as we practice photography using The Camera With You.
# Guidelines
- Growth: Take responsibility for your creativity. Try things and risk taking “bad” photos.
- People photos: Don’t take identifiable photos of people without their permission.
- Safety: You’re responsible for your own safety. When we go out to shoot photos, stay aware of your surroundings and take reasonable precautions. We don’t want photos from inside an urgent care center.
- Copyright: You own the photos you shoot for yourself. See www.copyright.gov/engage/photographers
- Tools: This group encourages creativity. We’re not here to argue DSLR vs smartphone, iOS vs Android, Pixels vs Galaxies, untouched vs edited.
- Constructive feedback: Critique the photo, not the photographer.
- Show kindness: Respect your fellow humans. We do not tolerate harassment, hate, or discrimination.
- On topic: No politics, canvassing, or soapboxing. We’re here to enjoy taking photos.
These rules are subject to change.

Near the summer solstice we’ll join the Weekend Hikers on their annual Summer Solstice Sunset Hike — a terrific chance to photograph sweeping views of the regional hills at golden hour.
Bring your iPhone or Android phone and we’ll talk about composing with the “Tool of Thirds” when composing landscape shots.
🥾 Experience: This is a hike. The route goes out and returns the same way for a total of 3.6 miles, give or take, with an elevation gain around 800’. We will pause for photo opportunities. You are responsible for your own safety. Route map.
🌤️ Weather: This hike usually has ideal conditions for glorious sunsets, but I can’t guarantee great lighting under clear skies. We’ll photography what we see.
⚠️ Safety: Be careful when turning onto and off of Stagecoach Road, as some drivers take speed limits as suggestions when descending the grade.
