Details

This spectacular varied walk promises stunning views along high rocky edges woodland and heather covered moors.

It starts with the climb up Bar Lane and turns off onto an elevated path, through shrubbery moorland with Baslow edge towering above us.
Our route takes us onto the dramatic gritstone escarpment of Baslow Edge with stunning views and wild moors wherever you turn your head.
There's a herd of Highland Cattle roaming the gritstone edges and moors. I was lucky to see them last year, just beautiful animals.
Fascinating rock formations can be seen, a well known large rock called the 'Eagle Stone' has been climbed by many walkers and not just.. Tradition goes the men of Baslow had to prove their worth for marriage by climbing to the top!

Leaving Baslow Edge, the route drops down through woodland, over a bridge with a stream and unusual brightly coloured flowers growing on the water in spring and summer.

The route carries on through rocky terrain below Gardom's Edge, and eventually onto the steep path leading up to Birchen Edge.

Birchen Edge is another gritstone escarpment with wider paths and moors, hopefully covered in heather.. There are many interesting rock formations alongside the path, the famous Nelson's Monument, a 3 metre gritstone column erected in 1810 in honour of Lord Nelson.
The 3 Ships nearby which have been carved with the names of 3 of Nelson's Ships, Victory Defiance and Royal Soverin (sic).

The route comes off Birchen Edge and heads for the famous Wellington's Monument, erected in 1866 and dedicated to the Duke of Wellington from his victory of the Battle of Waterloo.

Our route shortly joins a rocky path which takes us back down into Baslow to our car park.

A slightly challenging walk with a couple of short steepish ascents, expect uneven rocky paths

Toilets at the start in Baslow car park

Bring a packed lunch and plenty of water for the walk, picnic stop and breaks along the way as always

Walking boots are advised, a walking helps any ascents or descents

As always check the weather and dress accordingly

Look forward to sharing our next adventure..😉
