🍁Hulme End🍂9 mile Walk🍂Grindon🍂Butterton🍂Warslow🍁
Details
This walk in the White Peak countryside ventures up hills and dales along green pastures and through pretty villages.
It starts along the beautiful Manifold trail and heads to the pretty Village of Grindon in the Staffordshire Peak District above the Manifold Valley.
This ancient village of Grindon was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. It is home to pretty gritstone cottages and a church built in 1848 which is well known for its unusual stone carvings inside and outside the building.
Leaving Grindon we head to the equally picturesque Village of Butterton. As we approach the village with its sandstone cottages, we cross a Ford called Hoo Brook which needs careful footing when crossing as I soon found out..
Butterton, its name meaning 'Butter Hill', is a farming village, but there was also copper and lead mining there. Interestingly, Butterton is known as a 'Doubly Thankful Village' because all the men who served in the First and Second World Wars returned safely. There's a lovely country pub the 'Black Lion' with a curious cat, time permitting we'll pay a visit.
The last leg of our journey we make our way to Warslow crossing farmland and grassy trails. We approach the Manifold Way from an adventurous trail, just to end the walk on an exciting note...
A moderately challenging walk some hilly terrain, but good paths through villages and pastures
Catching up points as always and breaks along the way
Bring a picnic lunch and plenty of snacks and water
Walking boots no trainers
As always check the weather and dress accordingly
