Details

This walk has replaced the Roaches walk due to incoming hot weather of 27°+ over the weekend..

This scenic walk goes through villages along riverside paths and hill tops.

It starts from characterful Village of Alstonefield, surrounded by rolling countryside, pretty stone houses and a country inn which surrounds the Village Green.
Historic Buildings: Grade l listed church, 12th Century in part, a circular memorial stone dated 1518 in the churchyard is believed to be the oldest legible gravestone in England, an ancient tithe barn, ( a barn used in the middle ages to store rent and one-tenth of farmers produce required to give to the established church)
and a 16th Century Rectory.

Leaving Alstonefield, our route heads along pastures and up through the scenic hills of Narrowdale with stunning views around us.
Our path heads down to join a route through part of the beautiful Beresford Dale which soon joins Wolfscote Dale.

The stunning valley of Wolfscote Dale is now in the care of the National Trust. It is deep and steep-sided with a series of weirs along the crystal clear waters of the River Dove.
The dramatic scenery with lofty pinnacles and massive limestone outcrops and craggy surrounding rocks, offer ideal roosting places for Daubenton’s bats, which are sometimes seen close to water. Small semi alpine wildflowers cling to the crevices in the limestone crags, while herons and dippers are frequently seen flying along the river.

The end of Wolfscote Dale joins Milldale with a diversion onto Shining Tor with spectacular views around us as we walk along it.
The path off it drops downs to the Hamlet of Milldale.
This beautiful stone Hamlet is by the River Dove, the ancient Packhorse Bridge is crossed by many walkers everyday.
There's a small shop which sells drinks and snacks, including ice-cream, but watch out for the naughty ducks🦆which are known for diving their bills in rucksacks..

Leaving this peaceful Village, our last leg heads up along a lane which takes us back to Alstonefield where we started our scenic walk.
