🌥Chapel en le Frith 10 miles🌬Combs Edge Black Edge🌬Short Edge🌬Castle Naze🌥
Details
Our spectacular walk goes around Combs Edge Black Edge Hob Tor and Short Edge with stunning views all along these edges.
It starts from Chapel en le Frith which nestles within the dramatic landscape of the Peak District.
The town grew up around the church, built in 1225, and became known as the ‘Capital of the Peak’. Highlights in the old town include 18th century Church Brow and the traditional Market Place, with stocks and ancient cross.
Our route heads up from the station along a steep hill path to the remains of an Iron Age Fort at Castle Naze.
Castle Naze is a stunning viewpoint and overlooks Combs Village. It's a Hillfort at the top of a steep gritstone escarpment at 427m (1400ft) above sea level dating as far back as the Iron Age.
The gritstone cliffs here are popular with climbers.
We follow the narrow path along Combs Edge with beautiful views of Combs Reservoir.
Our route continues to Pyegreave Brook and into moorland, there are views in the distance of Fernilee and Errwood Reservoirs in the Goyt Valley.
Further along the path, views of Buxton and Axe Edge come into sight.
Our route passes Lightwood Reservoir below us and up along Flint Clough which soon joins Black Edge.
We head to the trig point which is 507 metres above sea-level on Black Edge, the views are stunning of the vast Grouse moors and Dove Holes with Kinder Scout in the distance.
Our next part of the route is Hob Tor looking down on Dove Holes village,
a small White Peak village up on the limestone hills outside Buxton.
The village’s name is believed to derive from the Celtic word dwfr, which means water, hence Water Holes or Dove Holes, rather than the dove family of birds. Historically, it developed as a community due to quarrying of the porous limestone rock which gives the White Peak area its name.
The route soon joins Short Edge, it takes us to the Iron Age Fort and we descend to join a route back to where we started.
Expect a couple of steepish ascents to get onto the edges..
Walking Boots are essential as well as warm layers for the edges
As always check the weather and dress accordingly
