What we’re about

Hey everyone!

We have something special happening here—a bookclub dedicated to exploring derivative fiction.

Now, you might be wondering, what exactly is derivative fiction? Well, it's all about works of art that draw inspiration from or are based on other well-known creations. It's like paying homage or putting a unique spin on something that already exists.

Here's the deal: We meet up every month to have engaging discussions, enjoy each other's company, and perhaps even indulge in some refreshments. Together, we'll dive into the fascinating world of derivative fiction, exploring its merits, quirks, and everything in between!

We'll be exploring three main categories:

1️⃣ Appropriations: These are re-imaginings of well-known texts that offer new perspectives or extend their meanings. It's all about transforming the familiar into something fresh and thought-provoking. Examples of this include Power of Darkness, the Icelandic Dracula, Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Bill Willingham's Fables or The Phantom by Susan Kay.

2️⃣ Cash Grab or Tie-In Novels: These are literary works based on popular TV shows, movies, or other media franchises. You'll be surprised by the variety of tie-in novels out there! Star Wars, Barbie, Transformers, Doctor Who, and even Bold and the Beautiful have novelizations.

3️⃣ Tribute or Fan Fiction: This is where creativity knows no bounds. We'll dive into the realm of fan-created stories that range from wonderfully imaginative to, well, let's just say there are some interesting gems to discover!

So, if you're passionate about media and want to chat about anything related to derivative fiction, this bookclub is the place to be. Come join us for lively discussions, new perspectives, and a whole lot of fun!
Looking forward to meeting all of you soon!
