Ghost Stories by Edith Wharton
Details
One of our traditions in this group is to read a spooky classic in October and discuss it at our November meeting, which falls shortly after Halloween. This year, we'll seek out our chills from Edith Wharton, best known for her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Age of Innocence and her novella Ethan Frome. As explained in this interesting article in the New Yorker, she also wrote ghost stories.
Wharton wrote a large number of stories dealing with ghosts and the supernatural, and the collection referenced in the New Yorker article contains just 11 of them. There doesn't appear to be a definitive edition, so I looked at multiple collections to see which stories were commonly featured. These seem to be the most frequently anthologized:
- Afterward
- Bewitched
- A Bottle of Perrier
- The Eyes
- The Lady's Maid's Bell
- The Triumph of Night
Try to read all of the above stories if you can. If you come across other ghost stories by Wharton that you think people in the group might enjoy, please share your recommendations in the comments below.
