What we’re about
Now more than 10,000 members! Join us for hikes in the Atlanta area - then dinner and drinks afterward. Most hikes include some local history and some scenic highlights such as old bridges, hidden trails, and the like. We clearly label each hike with skill level, anticipated time of completion, pace, and directions.
FYIs:
. I always include directions in the event description, so please use these written directions and not any pins or Google maps, as these often are incorrect
. On hike days when it is or will potentially be raining, I will announce any cancellations two hours prior to the event by posting "Canceled Rain" in the event title
. We typically do not permit dogs (some parks prohibit them, some terrain is too harsh), but we encourage attendance from any children who can keep the posted pace (but often it is us old fogies trying to keep up!)
. No surprises: We typically hike eight to ten miles - in the woods - which means a) there are uphills and downhills over rocks and roots and through stream beds, so be sure to have proper attire (hiking boots, hiking poles, and enough food and water), and b) be sure you are able to keep the posted pace so as to not needlessly slow the group down
I look forward to seeing you on the trails!

IF YOU ARE NOT COMING BUT HAVE SIGNED UP, PLEASE CHANGE YOUR STATUS ASAPHey everyone!
Yes, I know this is not hiking! However, a lot of you have asked about my kayak group, so if you haven't signed up or cant find it, now you have no excuse! If you are interested in joining Atlanta Recreational Kayakers on this trip, please read this post in its ENTIRETY.
This activity is weather dependent! This event is run by Atlanta Recreational Kayakers and posted here because Charlie is very generous and allows me too. Please feel free to sign up here if you cant find the ARK page.
Check out Atlanta Recreational Kayakers https://www.meetup.com/arkayakers on MeetupI know this is kinda last minute but I am off on Saturday YAY!!! Lets get together and do Dawson Forest on the Etowah River!
As usual we will be working with Appalachian Outfitters, who have 14 spots open on their 1200 noon bus! I have asked them to hold the bus for us, this will be first come first served. As usual if you sign up then change your mind, please take your name off the list so someone else has the chance to come.
From the Appalachian Outfitters website (www.canoegeorgia.com)...
"If you’re looking to spend the day paddling a quiet river, then this is the trip for you. Our longest and most remote river trip, this section of the Etowah is an excellent choice for even first-time paddlers. Available to groups of 4 or more, this trip offers the chance to experience one of the most biologically diverse rivers in the world as it wanders through the 10,000 acres, Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area."
We will be meeting at 11:30 AM. If you're later than 1200 noon, there's a risk of being left behind. This trip is 9 Miles on a very calm stretch of water that's some of the most beautiful in North Georgia. The overall paddle averages about 4 hours, but plan on 4-5 hours as we will stop somewhere along the way to eat. Bring a lunch for the river!Chris' boats unfortunately will be unavailable for this trip, we prefer to give Appalachian Outfitters the rental business as they accommodate us so often. However, if you own your own boat feel free to bring it.
That being said, here are the rates to rent or shuttle with AO.
One Person Boat: $45.00 (Includes shuttle)
Two Person Boat: $65.00 (Includes shuttle)
Shuttle Only: $20.00 Per Person (Not per vehicle like the Chestatee!)
We're essentially taking over the entire 1200 noon departure for this trip, and there will be just one van available for the shuttle with a maximum of 14 people. The reason for the additional costs and attendee limit is due to the extra duration of the shuttle upriver, and the fact that AO personnel actually sit around and wait on us to complete the trip. If you want to bring a guest, please let me know when you register so I can adjust the count manually to keep within the 14 person limit.
Payment(s)- All payments for the trip should be sent to my venmo @lucy-lofton (The last 4 of my phone number is 0567 for confirmation)
- You have 48 hours from the time you sign up to settle up and reserve your slot for the trip. Anyone that hasn't paid in that time frame will be moved to "Not Going" so that someone else will have the opportunity to go.
- If you cancel within 48 hours of the event, you'll get a 50% refund. Cancel within 24 hours, we keep your dough. This is waived, however, if you can find someone else to take your spot.
- The more stringent payment rules exist here because I'll be pre-paying for the whole trip prior to departure.
- If the weather does not cooperate, and we cancel for rain you will get a full refund.
- There is a slight chance that if the Etowah is not passable due to last Saturdays' storms, we would have to change to the Chestatee but then we would be charged less anyway. Please check here at 9am Saturday morning for any updates.
