Written by the celebrated playwright Clifford Odets and directed by the British film maker Alexander Mackendrick, The Sweet Smell of Success (1957) is an eviscerating satire on celebrity culture, starring Burt Lancaster as a sleazy but all-powerful gossip columnist, and Tony Curtis as his would be protégée, and is one of the darkest films to have ever come out of Hollywood.
