Ivan's Childhood (1962)
Details
This month’s film is Tarkovsky’s Ivan’s Childhood (’62). Together with Fellini’s 8 ½, Antonioni’s L’Avventura, Resnais’ Last Year in Marienbad, Godard’s Le Mepris, Visconti’s Death in Venice and Bergman’s The Seventh Seal, this is one of the foundational films of 20th century cinema.
Bergman described him as:
“the greatest film maker… who invents a new language.”
And this is comfortably his best and most important film.
