When Birdie returns home from a court-ordered rehab stint, she attempts to repair the life she’s shattered, but the walls she’s built around herself – and the ones others have built to keep her out – are higher than ever. Burdened by her failures and longing for her daughter Sadie’s forgiveness, Birdie finds herself navigating the rigid grip of an ultra-conservative community with disturbing practices and hidden dangers lurking beneath its virtuous surface. Clara, a seemingly supportive counselor, offers Birdie a path to redemption – but with insidious strings attached. Sadie, wary of her mother’s past neglect, keeps Birdie at arm’s length, further fueling Birdie’s self-doubt. Meanwhile, Samuel, the charismatic yet predatory Pastor, cloaks his judgment in kindness, leaving Birdie to question who she can truly trust.
As Birdie wrestles with the oppressive expectations of those around her, she slowly uncovers unsettling truths within a community determined to control her and eager to see her fail. Trapped in a psychological maze of shame, judgment, and predation, Birdie must confront those she’s wronged and find a way to break free from forces that seem intent on crushing her spirit. Will she summon the strength to rise above the shadows of her past and escape the grip of this twisted community to rebuild her fractured relationship with Sadie, or will the unyielding scrutiny of this oppressive environment finally pull her under? A psychological thriller exploring the disturbing intersections of sexism, redemption, and social control.
