Critical Phenomenology, Session 4
Details
NOTE: Please reach out to us for information on how to join.
We value the privacy and intimacy of our classroom space. So, unlike presentations and other such events, we don't publicly advertise a Zoom registration link; we keep it in-house.
Starting October 3rd at 1:30 PM EST, Angela Heredia will begin her Special Topics course, "Critical Phenomenology: Disorienting Embodied Lived Experience," in it, exploring phenomenology's critical seed, echoes, and appropriations 🔥
She will lead us through an exploration of an archive of thinkers who have appropriated phenomenology's critical potential to interrogate the deepest assumptions ingrained in the world-making practices that frame our embodied lived experience.
We will discuss early critical orientations of phenomenology in the work of Merleau-Ponty, Beauvoir and Fanon, as well as later critical appropriations of the phenomenological tenet in relation to the questions of race, gender, sexuality, coloniality, and the more-than-human environment.
We will engage with thinkers like Sara Ahmed, Nelson Maldonado Torres, Astrida Neimanis, and Gloria Anzaldua, asking ourselves how these perspectives might redefine what phenomenology can be: its methods, modes of narration, as well as implications and point of departure.
This course is free and open to our Study Group members - membership is free!
We will discuss the material slowly in an open, kind, and encouraging environment; a background in philosophy or the humanities is appreciated but not necessary.
