Discover Hidden Beauty: A Morning Photo Walk at Prairie Park Fishery Trail

Details

Join us for a relaxed morning dedicated to nature and bird photography at Prairie Park Fishery Trail. This scenic location on the southeast side of Cedar Rapids offers a rich mix of prairie, woodland, and wetland habitats—perfect for capturing early light, bird activity, and quiet natural moments. Whether you're working on your portfolio or just enjoying time behind the lens, this is a great spot to explore with fellow photographers.

Donald and Shari will be there to welcome you and walk alongside the group. If you have questions about photography, gear, camera settings, or creative choices, feel free to ask—we're happy to help and will do our best to support you wherever you're at in your journey.

We'll meet at the north end of the parking area at 6:50 AM, with our walk beginning at 7:00 sharp. Stay for the full three hours or drop in for a bit—stay with the group or explore on your own, either way, you'll be in good company. This meetup is designed specifically for photographers who love capturing the wild.
What to bring:

  • Camera or phone
  • Telephoto lens if you have one (300mm+ is best for birds)
  • Macro lens for flowers and such
  • Wide angle for water landscapes
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Water and snack
  • Bug spray (it can be buggy this time of year)
  • Binoculars (optional)

Trail & Activity Level:
The trail at Prairie Park Fishery is paved, level, and easy to navigate, making it accessible for most fitness levels. We'll follow a gentle loop along the water and through adjacent prairie and woodland edges. The pace will be slow and mindful, with plenty of stops for photographing birds, wildlife, and landscapes. This is a relaxed, photography-focused walk—not a workout—so bring your camera, not your running shoes.

This is a welcoming space to practice your craft, connect with others, and simply enjoy being out in nature with your camera or other image capturing device.
