About us
Most hikes posted will be over 8 miles. Shorter hikes will have higher elevation gains to make up for it. Occasionally there will be shorter evening hikes for those who want to stay in shape. I'll also be posting backpacking trips in state, out of state and out of country. The purpose of this group is to see if there are any other hikers out there who want to put in the miles to get to some really amazing spots. If you're not used to doing 10 miles and 2000 feet elevation, you will probably want to try a more beginner hiking group or get in shape to do so. I'm not the fastest or the most fit hiker out there, but I like the bigger hikes and I have to believe there are others out there as well. So if this looks like a fit for you, welcome!
This is a social group. We don't have a tremendous amount of rules, but here they are:
- Personal responsibility - This means that if you are faster or slower than the majority, you need to make sure you have some sort of navigation aid. If you fall far behind, we will try to wait but at some point we'll need to assume you decided it was too much and turned around (no judgement, I've done my share of turning around). If you blow past us, then you are responsible for finding the route yourself. In no event do the organizers of this group take responsibility for you getting lost, injured, or killed during the activities.
- We're pretty laid back group but certain things won't be tolerated.
- Talking about politics. We're here to get away from all that.
- Intolerance of any kind. Everyone is welcome.
- Using our group as a travel agency. Many people want to go on the hikes. Don't bother to sign up if you're going to go off on your own.
- Unwanted advances towards anyone. This goes males and females.
There are plenty of other hiking groups out there. We want this group to be fun, laid, back, kind, and enjoyable for everyone.

Colorado National Monument and Rattlesnake Canyon Arches
Colorado National Monument, Grand Junction, CO, USRattlesnake Canyon in Colorado's Mcinnis Canyons National Consrvation Area boasts around 35 natural arches, including eight significant ones, making it the second-highest concentration of arches in the United States, second only to Arches National Park. Key arches include the large Cedar Tree Arch, Rainbow Arch, Arrowhead Arch, and the unique Hole-in-the-Bridge Arch. The Rattlesnake Canyon boasts nine arches, with six on the loop trail and an additional three more that are worth the small detours. We will try and see all nine arches. We are allowed to scramble on the arches making this a unique trip.
We will be Car camping in the Saddlehorn Campground in Colorado National Monument. I have reserved camp sites 49B, 51B and 24B. Both sites have great views. Drive up Friday afternoon or evening depending on your schedule. We can car pool from the Wooly Mammoth Park and Ride. Feel free to get additional camping sites if you want, but don't wait they will not be there long. It was $132 to reserve them. So $8 per person.
Saturday morning after breakfast we will drive through the park to the road that takes us to Rattlesnake Canyon. Road access to Rattlesnake Canyon is within Colorado National Monument. The road to Rattlesnake canyon/Blackridge trailhead requires 4x4 with some clearance. I was there about 8 years ago and I had to park once the road got to rough and hike the rest of the way in. There is another trail that we can use, it is close to 14 miles RT with 3,000 feet gain. Driving in and getting as close to the main trailhead is a better option. Hike is approx. 10 miles and 1,400' elevation gain from my previous time there.
We can explore Colorado National Monument Saturday Evening or Sunday Morning.
