Is International Law irrelevant in an era of the presidential outlaw? And can Natural Law step in to the breach?

Edit: In light of recent events I am expanding this topic to include Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT) in El Salvador and recent killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by Federal Agents including from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

In this philosophy club session I will give you a PPT presentation covering the basics (for about 20 mins) prior to opening the floor to discussion:

- What is international law and why is it important?
- What is natural law and how is it different to “positive law”? – the latter relying on rights being bestowed by the authority at the time, rather than being inherent
- Does it matter that Trump has stated his disregard for international law and the UN system (which upholds international law more broadly)?
- Can and should Natural Law be given more prominence in a time of instability and uncertainty?
- Plus legal and philosophical implications of CECOT and ICE shootings in above context.

Note: This is a philosophy debate, and as such is apolitical and supports freedom of speech. All views welcome, always.
Reason with the argument; never attack the person (Ad Hominem) – the latter is not philosophical debate.
I’ll add more info and meeting link nearer the time, but this is just a save-the-date for now.
This event will not be recorded.
I look forward to seeing you! Elizabeth
