What if the price of happiness was your freedom?

For our December Reading Salon, we’re stepping into the unsettling world of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World — a society where everyone is conditioned to be happy, discomfort is carefully eliminated, and individuality comes at a dangerous price.

First published in 1932, Huxley’s dystopian masterpiece imagined a future shaped by technology, consumerism, social conditioning, and the pursuit of pleasure. Nearly a century later, some of its questions feel more relevant than ever.

What happens when happiness becomes an obligation?

• Is a world without suffering really a better world?
• Can we be truly free if our desires are shaped by society?
• Is comfort worth sacrificing individuality?
• What makes us human in a world designed for efficiency and pleasure?
• And perhaps most importantly: would we even recognise a dystopia if we were happy living in it?

We’ll explore the novel itself, Huxley’s vision of the future, the historical context in which it was written, and the fascinating parallels between his imagined society and our own.

Expect thoughtful conversations, different perspectives, a few uncomfortable questions, and plenty of room for disagreement.

📖 Please read Brave New World before the meeting. Any edition and any language is absolutely fine; the discussion itself will be in English.

📌 A little note on the date: This Reading Salon will take place over the weekend of 12–13 December 2026. The exact day, time, and venue will be confirmed in November, following our November gathering on the 15th.
