About us
The Reading Salon Luxembourg
Great books. Big ideas. Better conversations.
There are books we have been meaning to read for years — the ones everyone seems to know, quote and reference, but that somehow never made it off our reading list.
The Reading Salon is a book club for curious adults who want to finally catch up on great literature, broaden their cultural knowledge and have thoughtful conversations along the way.
We meet approximately once every five to six weeks in Luxembourg, giving everyone enough time to read without turning it into another weekly obligation.
What do we read?
Our reading list is not limited to traditional literary classics.
The idea is simple: every book is worth knowing.
We will explore influential and outstanding works across different countries, periods and genres — from literary classics and Nobel Prize-winning authors to gothic fiction, science fiction, dystopias, philosophical novels, modern classics and landmark works of non-fiction.
That could mean anything from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Jane Austen or Dostoevsky to Dune, One Hundred Years of Solitude, The Great Gatsby, Kafka, Virginia Woolf, Orwell or other books that have left a lasting mark on literature and culture.
What happens at a Reading Salon?
Each meeting is built around discussion rather than lectures.
We will briefly explore the context behind the book — the author, the period and why the work became significant — before moving into the ideas, questions and conflicts at its heart.
Expect:
- guided discussion questions
- cultural and historical context
- connections to philosophy, art, film and contemporary life
- controversial questions with no obvious answer
- occasional mini-debates where we take opposing positions and defend them
You can disagree with the book, the author and each other.
The goal is to think, argue respectfully, hear perspectives different from your own and leave with more questions than you arrived with.
Who is this for?
The Reading Salon is designed especially for busy adults who want to read more, become better-read and culturally literate, and meet people who enjoy discussing something beyond work and everyday life.
If you have ever thought “I really should read that someday”, this is your reason to finally do it.
Discussions will be held in English, and both native and non-native speakers are very welcome.
Our first book — October
Mary Shelley — Frankenstein
A gothic classic, an early landmark of science fiction and a surprisingly modern exploration of ambition, responsibility, loneliness and what it means to be human.
And perhaps the most important question of all:
Who is the real monster?
