The Reading Salon: Jane Eyre

What does it mean to choose yourself when the world expects you to choose otherwise?

For our January Reading Salon, we’re entering the atmospheric world of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre — a story of love, independence, morality, and a young woman’s determination to live life on her own terms.

First published in 1847, the novel challenged Victorian expectations of women, class, and marriage. But beyond its famous romance lies something even more compelling: the story of a woman fighting to preserve her identity, dignity, and principles in a world that constantly asks her to compromise.

How much of ourselves should we be willing to sacrifice for love?

• Can love truly exist without equality?
• Where do we draw the line between compromise and losing ourselves?
• Is Jane Eyre a feminist heroine ahead of her time?
• How much of our destiny is shaped by social class and circumstance?
• And perhaps most importantly: can following your heart ever justify betraying your principles?

We’ll explore the novel itself, Charlotte Brontë’s extraordinary life, the expectations placed on women in Victorian England, and the Gothic elements that make Jane Eyre so much more than a conventional love story.

Expect lively discussions, different interpretations, a little Victorian drama, and perhaps a few disagreements about one particularly complicated gentleman.

📖 Please read Jane Eyre before the meeting. Any edition and any language is absolutely fine; the discussion itself will be in English.

📌 A little note on the date: This Reading Salon will take place over the weekend of 16–17 January 2027. The exact day, time, and venue will be confirmed in November, following our November gathering on the 15th.
