Program Description:
Overcome the urge to wet exit in the event of a capsize, add to your skill set and learn to roll your kayak in a controlled setting. A bomb-proof roll is a fundamental skill for the whitewater boater and a great confidence booster for the sea kayaker encountering rough water conditions.
Following the skill building approach, each participant will learn and practice proper wet exit techniques.
Types of rolls introduced will include the C-to-C and Sweep. The elements of each roll will be introduced and practiced in a progressive approach: the setup (getting into position to begin the roll); the support phase (using a paddle, hands or float for support on the water) and; the hip snap (bringing the boat underneath you to sit upright and completing the roll).
This skill can be accomplished using a properly outfitted whitewater or sea kayak. Recreational style boats lack the proper kayaker to boat contact points (thigh braces; hip pads) that allow for rolling to be accomplished.
Program Design: This Clinic is comprised of two sections (10am-11:30am / 11:30am-1pm) each 90 minutes in duration. As Rolling is a very intensive hands-on fatiguing skill to learn, I've found over the years that the most productive method is with two/perhaps three participants for an hour and a half. This provides enough time to learn, practice and put into play the sequence for a successful roll. Additionally by having at least one other person to alternate with it allows the rolling student to see what works and more more importantly doesn't work observing from the outside. It also allows for a brief rest before continuing on. I highly recommend a good nights sleep and a hearty breakfast before this program.
11/30/13 This Program is also promoted through our Showroom and Blog so at this time others have signed up for spaces in both sessions. There remains one space available in each session.
2/1/14 The first session is full. One space remains for the 11:30am-1pm time slot.
2/8/14. Program Full. Please give a call or email to set up your own private instructional program date.
Program Setting:
The pool at the Culinary Institute of America is very pleasant with water temps from 81-86 degrees. While the pool is warm, we will be wet the entire time so if you are prone to chilling then a bit of light neoprene garb is recommended.
Program Equipment:
Most paddlers prefer using the equipment they own and use in the field. If you are in need of gear we have an entire Program Fleet of P&H, Valley, North Shore, and Venture kayaks, Werner, Lendal and Saltwood paddles plus all the accessories so please let us know if providing gear for you is preferable. Please feel free to contact me at our Showroom 845-229-0595 or email marshall@the-river-connection for more info prior to the program.
