# From Git commits to Terraform
We'll start the talk with the lifecycle of a Rails application being pushed to a platform-as-a-service like Heroku, and then walk the road from how a developer continues evolving an app from there. Starting with a bare server, adding shell scripts to make deployments easier, and then using something like Docker to standardize each release. Each one fixes the last one's biggest concern.
We continue by talking about four common types of applications and the infrastructure behind them: a static site, a Rails app with Postgres, a serverless API, and a full-stack JavaScript app. This is where Terraform comes in, letting us describe that infrastructure in code and have a cloud like AWS create it. We'll run it on a laptop against a free local emulator, so no AWS account is needed.
No infrastructure experience needed, as this is mostly an introduction. Bring a laptop with Docker and Terraform if you want to follow along, or just come and watch.
