Crops that are primarily grown for their edible seeds, like grains and dry beans, are often ignored in the backyard and community garden because people either don't think of them or they think these crops need a huge amount of space. This is a mistake. In this virtual class, we will cover some of the amazing range of these easy-to-grow crops and how to grow, clean, and store them, along with how to utilize their multitude of other edible uses.

We'll cover crops like sunflowers, corn, dry beans, cowpea, quinoa, and its relatives, sesame, chia, peas, amaranth, wheat, rice, and buckwheat. This group of crops tends to have very few pests and diseases compared to conventional vegetables (which is why they can be grown on such a large scale). They can also be stored long-term, so you can eat them any time of year. Many of them have other uses that most people don't think about, including edible leaves, flowers, or buds, or growing them as sprouts or microgreens.
