Talks

TALK 1: Django vs Rails: A detailed comparison

Talk Description:

Jenna has spent her career building for the web. This means that she’s been able to work in several web frameworks, including Laravel, Flask, Django, and Rails. This talk will focus on and compare Django and Rails. How long does it take to bootstrap a REST API? What auth libraries are available? Which standard web app features come out-of-the-box and which aren’t? Jenna will cover the facts and let you make your own decision about which framework you’ll choose for your next project.

Speaker Bio:

Jenna works at First Round, the seed-stage venture capital firm, where she builds internal tools and products for the First Round community. Previously, Jenna worked at several early-stage startups, always as an early software engineer trying to find product-market fit. In her free time, Jenna volunteers with Code2040 and enjoys reading about the difficulties of large companies migrating their Python 2 codebases to Python 3.

TALK 2: Building mapping applications with Django

Talk Description:

This talk will outline some of the key challenges building mapping applications, and then dive into the gory details around getting Django Rest Framework and Django/PostGis to perform well on larger maps.

Speaker Bio:

Stan Knutson is the co-founder of PowWow Energy and has been using DJango for 5 years building mapping and data science applications to help farmers save water, energy and improve their crops. Previously he was a chief architect at SAP, and co-founder of Purisma, later acquired by Dun & Bradstreet.
