In Our Time (光陰的故事) (1982)
2K RESTORATION
Original Title: 光陰的故事
Director: Jim Tao, Edward Yang, Ko I-chen, Chang Yi
Country: Taiwan
Language: Mandarin with English subtitles
Runtime: 109 min
Rating: PG
Synopsis
“That sense of helplessness during a girl’s first menstruation is significant. It goes beyond mere emotions. Emotions are rooted in personal experiences. Therefore, engaging emotions and rationality is essential to evoke a new sensation. It allows you to explore beyond personal experiences, making things more intriguing.” —Edward Yang
In Our Time consists of four segments. The second segment, Expectations, is directed by Yang. The story follows Xiao-fen, a teenage girl living with her mother and older sister, whose life takes a turn when a college boy becomes a lodger in their home. As Xiao-fen experiences her first menstruation, romantic desires emerge. Proficient in classical music, Yang considers Expectations as the second movement of the whole piece, delicately unfolding the intimate female growth experience with an adagio rhythm and precise mise-en-scene.

The Wind (2002–2005)
Original Title: 追风
Director: Edward Yang
Country: Taiwan
Runtime: 7 mins
Language: Mandarin with English subtitles
Synopsis
Of the many unrealized projects Yang developed in the wake of Yi Yi, the one that came the closest to fruition was an ambitious animated martial arts movie inspired by his lifelong love of graphic novels and his friendship with Jackie Chan. Though production on The Wind was halted after Yang’s death, this brief assembly of completed scenes offers a glimpse of what might have been.
