“On the Emotions”: A Close Reading of Book III of Spinoza’s Ethics (Pre-Read)

Book II of Spinoza’s Ethics lays out his mind-body theory and his theory of knowledge which, together with his theory of the emotions (Book III), form the basis of his ethical theory (Book IV).

In this meeting, we will take a look at the definitions and the first 13 propositions of Part III, and then we'll examine Spinoza's use of the idea of conatus.

We will use Curley's translation of the Ethics.

We will continue to make recordings of our meetings available on the YouTube channel The Spinoza Stoa. Members of the group are invited to post comments on these videos.
