Literature & Philosophy Reading Group: Cathedral by Raymond Carver

Details
MAY: Cathedral by Raymond Carver
Next time we will discuss three short stories from Cathedral by Raymond Carver, written in a seemingly simple and spare prose, but not less powerful for that. We will sneak into the lives of characters who are having a hard time. Some are trying to come to terms with loss, others are wrestling with stagnation and alienation, but all of them will find temporary relief and warmth in the most unexpected of places: the bond with a stranger. How is it that prejudice towards the stranger can turn into intimacy, and suspicion into trust? What is the power of those human connections that, no matter how brief and difficult to categorize, can open new vistas in a life and change its course? These open-ended stories will also work for us as exercises in ambiguity, an invitation to suspend our need for easy explanations and definitive conclusions.
