Details
Great discussion. I was focused on the fact that Kant always wants to include something about teaching in all his Critiques--you all were struck by the relationship between art and society. Your concerns were definitely more interesting.

THIS IS WHERE WE LEFT OFF
Β§60 - Appendix of Taste
- There is something "scientific" in art, e.g., something technical
- Art has to do with indefinite concepts or ideas
- The artist should know the rules so she can be free to play according to them, or efen to create her own game in contrast to them.
- But to render sensible the supersensible, the artist must translate by analogy the indeterminate into something more determinate
- Art is not a science, but there is still something salutory in its teaching
- During Kant's time, Enlightenment was the idea of the artist, civilizing humanity from the state of nature.
- Art will thus change as people become more enlightened.
