Critique of Pure Reason 8 - Transcendental Exposition of Space

Details

Thank you everyone for attending and participating in today's meeting. I rather liked the combination of broad discussion about the opening sections of the Transcendental Aesthetic with diving into the details of the text, but next time, I'll try to get into the details quicker. We finished the Metaphysical Exposition of Space , and will kick off next time at Section 3 of the Transcendental Aesthetic, the Transcendental Exposition of Space.

READ FOR NEXT TIME

Read §§3 through 8 of Transcendental Aesthetic B (B33 through B72)

08/17/25 - Session 8, Finish Transcendental B
08/29/25 - Session 9, Start Transcendental Logic
09/14/25 - Session 10, Start the Transcendental Analytic

TAKEAWAYS FROM SECTIONS 1 AND 2 OF THE TRANSCENDENTAL AESTHETIC

§1 - Introduction to the Transcendental Aesthetic

  1. Consciousness of an object means perceiving an object (intuition) and thinking of and object.
  2. But in order to think about an object, the object must be there. Thus cognition consists of intuiting and understanding an object.

§2 - Metaphysical Exposition of Space

  1. Space is not something we discovered from experience.
  2. Space necessarily precedes experience (it is prior to it or a priori)
  3. Space is not a concept; it is the way in which we perceive things"
  4. Space can contain within it infinitely many shapes or sub spaces.

NOTES/RESOURCES

1. An analysis of time as explicated in the Transcendental Analytic.

2. Here's a thesis I found online that explains Kant's account of sensation compared to Leibniz'. In addition to helping us understand certain comments Kant makes in the Transcendental Aesthetic, this will come in handy later on when we get into the Amphiboly. The reason why Leibniz is is wrong here is the same as why he's wrong there.

3. ***Hot off the press!*** - Updated slides about space in the Critique of Pure Reason (If anyone out there has an idea to easily visualize Slide #4 that analyzes judgments of knowledge according to a priori, a posteriori, synthetic, and analytic, contributions and suggestions are welcome).

4. This meetup is for the Critique of Pure Reason. Anyone interested in teleology and the Critique of Judgment should come to the meeting I host on that subject. Next one is below.
