Walk Into the Dark: Full Moon Hike // Strawberry Moon
Details
Monday, June 29 | 7:15 PM | Boulder, CO
The Strawberry Moon. Named for the season when berries ripen, not because the moon turns red.
Sunset is at 8:34 PM. Moonrise is at 8:44 PM. That's a 10-minute window where the sun drops behind the Divide and the full moon rises over the plains.
We're meeting at South Mesa Trailhead at 7:15 PM and heading out at 7:30. The hike to the lookout takes about an hour. Moderate trail with a steep final push that earns the view. We arrive just before sunset, catch the light shift, and then watch the Strawberry Moon come up while the sky is still glowing.
The hike back is under full moonlight.
Total time is about 2.5 hours. Back at the trailhead by 10:00. It's a Monday night. Your Tuesday self might have opinions about this, but your Tuesday self didn't watch a full moon rise from a mountain.
What to bring:
Headlamp (you might want it for the descent), but we try to go dark once the moon is up)
Layers. Late June evenings can still drop into the 50s after sunset.
Water.
Sturdy shoes.
A snack to share at the top if you're feeling generous. Not required, but encouraged.
Parking: South Mesa Trailhead, 3633 Eldorado Springs Dr, Boulder. $5 daily fee for non-Boulder County vehicles.
Details on parking will go out to RSVPs closer to the date.
This is what we do. We show up for the things most people scroll past.
