Saturday, June 20 | 3:00 AM | Boulder, CO

The longest day of the year starts in the dark.

The summer solstice hits at 2:24 AM on June 21. We're not waiting for it to find us. We're meeting at 3:00 AM, headlamps on, and hiking to the summit before the sun comes up.
Sunrise is at 5:32 AM. That gives us about two and a half hours to climb in the dark, find our spot, and watch the sky crack open on the longest day of the year.

If you've never seen a Colorado sunrise from a summit, this is the one.

The route is about 8 miles round trip with real elevation gain. In the dark it feels different. Your world shrinks to the circle of your headlamp and the sound of your breathing. Then the sky starts to shift and everything opens up.

We summit, we watch the sunrise, we sit with it for a bit. Then we hike down in full daylight. Back at the trailhead by 8:00 AM. You'll have the entire longest day of the year still ahead of you, and you'll have already done the hardest thing most people do all week.

Trailhead location is TBD. We're scouting options in the Boulder area including South Mesa, the Flatirons, and a few others. Final location and details will go out to RSVPs closer to the date.

What to bring:

Headlamp (non-negotiable)
Layers. It can be in the 40s at altitude before dawn, even in June.
Water. More than you think.
Sturdy shoes.
A snack for the summit to share if you're feeling generous. Not required, but encouraged.

Parking and trailhead details will be sent to RSVPs once the route is confirmed.
3 AM alarm. No snooze. See you in the dark.
