July's full moon is the Buck Moon, named for this stretch of summer when male deer are growing their antlers fastest. By now the velvety racks are out in full, on their way to a fresh set they grow and shed every single year.
Here's the plan. We meet at South Mesa Trailhead at 7:15 and head out at 7:30. About an hour up to the lookout, moderate the whole way with one steep push at the end that earns the view. We get there as the sun drops behind the Divide, settle in, and watch the Buck Moon rise at 8:38 while the sky is still glowing. Then we walk back down under its light.
Total time about 2.5 hours, back to the cars by 10.
Bring a headlamp for the descent, though we like to kill the lights once the moon takes over. Layers, since these evenings cool off faster than you'd expect in July. Water and sturdy shoes. And if you're feeling generous, a snack to pass around at the top.
Parking is at South Mesa Trailhead, 3633 Eldorado Springs Dr. There's a $5 daily fee for non-Boulder County vehicles. I'll send parking details to everyone who RSVPs as we get closer.
