What we’re about
The South Philadelphiatennisassociation has been serving the area since 2011. Winning its second “CTA of the year award” we can’t wait to see our friends again this spring, and bring laughs, high-fives, and some heavy breathing back to the courts. Our “played to learn“ formats, provide movement, action, and personal challenge with every ball. Have fun with “Philly’s Phinest” and share some hits and giggles, even if it’s at your own expense. 😁 This is the sport of a lifetime and @This ain’t no country club workout!” So lace ‘em up and strut out to the courts and have a great time learning, working and feeling amazing after a good hit around with great friends. The SPTA “Fun, Friends, and Fitness Through Urban Tennis!”

120 minute time Structure
15-30 minutes: short and full court hitting warm ups including 1-Up and 1-Back, as well as 2-Up positioning. Play-to-Learn will give you the tools and information you need from day 1. You will be shown the most important segments of a stroke from the beginning of the class, and be able to successfully demonstrate and accomplish what is right for you that day! It is up to each player, with the guidance of your coach, to focus their body awareness and make the CORRECT adjustments along the way. You just can’t beat a warm-up that is a lesson in itself. Perfection may be a fun goal to chase, but it is the conquering of each other’s small individual goals, with your SPTA hitting partners, which will bring the highest levels of enjoyment through your successes.
10 Minutes: Finish the warm up with higher-paced rallies, and some competitive games that make sure the blood is pumping and muscles are warmed up. After a quick ball pick-up, and some individual pointers, we can get a good stretch in as we get ready to step it up. “This ain’t no country club!”
10 minutes: stretch while reviewing the "Theme of the Day." TOTD will cover a single aspect of tennis that may vary in many ways of execution, according to the levels of the individual, but is presented and practiced in a way that will let each player accomplish their own specific goals. Again, with our fun Play-to-Learn approach to learning, you have a great time hitting with different players possessing multiple skills and abilities. Each player has assignments to work on individually that will improve their game.
30-45 minutes: Dead-ball and self-feeding drills that will emphasize a theme of that day. We use Semi-cooperative hitting drills and games that work on developing stroke consistency, shot selection and execution, while improving your abilities to manage your play from all areas of the court. Keep the ball in play and attack when you can. Aggressive high-percentage is a process of confidence building and enthusiastic testing of your abilities and focus. You’ll see your game improve step by step.
LEARNING THROUGH DEMONSTRATION, VISUALIZATION AND PARTICIPATION. See how to do it, visualize how to do it, feel yourself doing it, now you can learn to do it even better! A Clear understanding of what needs to be done, and a continuous amount of proper repetition. Lot’s of repetition! Muscle memory is the subconscious responses from your body that happen naturally with overthinking or worrying. You know you’re doing the right thing, so do it.
15-30 minutes: We finish the class with some fun group games, competitive play, or rule-enhanced situations. As we enjoy putting out the rest our energy and effort, we sometimes celebrate our good two-hours on the courts by recognizing our "Rock Solid" player of the day!
“Rock Solid” players can be a person who is experiencing their first time out to play, or even an experienced player who helped their partners practice on their game as much as their own. Win a crazy prize, some SPTA or USTA swag, and the admiration of the rest of the group, with a round of applause for a Rock Solid effort. - Spring Drill & Play Thursday Nights at Barry PlaygroundBarry Playground, Philadelphia, PA$25.00
