Discussion Existentialism

At this meeting we will discuss Existentialism. From Wikipedia: Existentialism is the term applied to the work of a number of 19th- and 20th-century philosophers who, despite profound doctrinal differences, generally held that the focus of philosophical thought should be to deal with the conditions of existence of the individual person and his or her emotions, actions, responsibilities, and thoughts... Existentialism became fashionable in the post-World War years as a way to reassert the importance of human individuality and freedom. With several organizers interested in this topic, including one who has a degree in philosophy, we will give a brief over view and introduction to existentialism followed by a lively discussion. If you have a topic idea for a future meetup and would like to moderate the discussion, visit this link for instruction on how to submit it.

I blogged some thoughts stimulated by our meetup on existentialism: http://blog.cjfearnley.com/2010/12/02/some-thoughts-on-the-nature-and-pervasiveness-of-existentialism/

Good discussion. Good ideas. The assistant organizers contributed slightly more assertively than the rest of the group. There were too many "quiet" people whose thoughts I wanted to hear. If the moderators / assistant organizers solicited input from the "quiet" people, I think the discussion would have been richer.

This was my first time with this meet-up. It's a terrific group. It was just the right size, and the discussion was lively, but civil. These are well-read, thinking people. I'm looking forward to attending more of this group's meet-ups! Nice to meet all of you!
