Why Be a Comprehensivist?
Details
This event is a cross-posting of a "52 Living Ideas" meetup from their series "Comprehensivist Wednesdays" which CJ Fearnley and Joe Bullock are helping to organize. The format will be a bit different from ordinary Thinking Society events.
This event will provide an introduction to comprehensivism, the practice of comprehending our worlds broadly and deeply.
The event will begin with a panel discussion with several people (including CJ Fearnley, Joe Bullock, and Shrikant Rangnekar, the organizer of "52 Living Ideas") who identify as comprehensivist in their approach. The panelists will talk at a personal level on three topics:
- Their Story: How did they discover their comprehensivist approach? Why did it grow on them? How do they use it now?
- Potential of Comprehensivism: What does a comprehensivist approach mean to them? What do they think comprehensivism has to offer to the world?
- Tips on how to be more comprehensivist.
After the panel discussion, the panelists will sit down in breakout rooms with a group of 6-8 people so that each person can discuss:
- What is your experience If any with comprehensivist approach?
- What do you see as its potential?
- What can you do to to be more comprehensivist?
Then we will come back together in the large group and every attendee will get 2-3 minutes to give their takeaways, propose topics and questions for following Wednesdays. Then we will wrap up.
This event is designed so that regardless of whether you are only curious and intrigued by the topic or you have been practicing comprehensivism all your life, you will walk away with new insights.
This is going to be good; don’t miss it!
Current list of panelists: CJ, Shrikant, Joe, Mici, Sanjay, Debra, and John.
“What is Comprehensivism?
—Comprehensivism means comprehending our worlds broadly and deeply.
—It is a facility in questioning, conceptualizing, interpreting, and acting to build a multi-perspectival yet integrated understanding of the world, how it works, and how it changes.
—It implies developing a large set of subjects about which one can effectively inquire, contextualize, interpret & assess, and creatively re-imagine and re-combine for meaningful insights and the forging of new possibilities.
—It entails developing a faculty for helping self and others build a broad range of interests and concerns, comprehensive knowledge, and skills, that is, a faculty for comprehensivism awareness and competency.”

Welcome to the series “Comprehensivists Wednesdays”. Multi-disciplinary, Renaissance Persons, Polymaths, Generalists are some of the ways of describing this approach which Buckminster Fuller called Comprehensivity, and described as “macro-comprehensive and micro-incisive”. CJ defines it as “Comprehensivism means comprehending our worlds broadly and deeply. “ We are organizing this series in collaboration with several folks from Greater Philadelphia Thinking Society.
