The Necessities & Impossibilities of Comprehensivism @Comprehensivist Wednesdays

Details

If comprehensivism is the process of making sense of it all and of each other, is it even possible? Even if it is impossible, is it necessary that we pursue as many comprehensive comprehensions as we can muster? How can we reconcile the necessities and impossibilities of comprehensivism?

These questions are explored in the essay "The Necessities and Impossibilities of Comprehensivism" https://www.cjfearnley.com/CfC/2020/08/the-necessities-and-impossibilities-of-comprehensivism/ .

The presentation and Q&A sections of all "52 Living Ideas" Meetups are recorded and posted on YouTube. Feel free to keep your video on or off as you prefer.

Event format:

  1. The Necessities of Comprehensivism

This will include a 5-10 minute presentation by CJ Fearnley followed by Q&A. Then participants will join breakout rooms with a group of 6-8 people so that each person can discuss:

  • Do you agree that forming a proper way of knowing, a proper way of acting, and managing on an on-going and regenerative basis the entire world system are each compelling necessities for our practice of comprehensivity?
  1. The Impossibilities and Practice of Comprehensivism

This will include a 5-10 minute presentation by CJ Fearnley followed by Q&A. Then participants will join breakout rooms with a group of 6-8 people so that each person can discuss:

  • Do you agree that analysis and value paralysis as well as the paralysis of wholism are impossibilities challenging our practice of comprehensivity?
  • How might you reconcile these necessities and impossibilities of comprehensivism in your own practice of the art of comprehensivity?
  1. Then we will come back together in the large group and every attendee will have the opportunity of giving their reflections and takeaways for 2-3 minutes. Then we will wrap up.

Welcome to the series "Comprehensivist Wednesdays". Transdisciplinarity, Renaissance humanism, homo universalis, and Polymathy are some of the ways of describing this approach which Buckminster Fuller called Comprehensivity and described as “macro-comprehensive and micro-incisive”.
