Karen Montanaro will explain and show how the arts optimize the natural but often ill-fated process whereby the individual’s private “inner life” and public, “outer life” fuse to form an identity. this understanding of ourselves — the mathematically precise, geometrically stable architecture of our identity — is crucial to unlocking the "nuclear" power of the arts to make us whole.

Many of the alarming and tragic challenges in the world that we seem powerless to address are ripple effects of an age-old identity crisis whereby we exploit our self, our neighbor, and our ecosystems for the sake of "progress".

Karen will explain and illustrate how the art-experience solves this identity crisis: The art-experience proves — viscerally and unequivocally — that we are not separate islands of self-interest but unique expressions of a universal spirit.

Her idea is succinctly explained in this short 1m 28s video

Event format:

Karen's presentation will be split into two segments. Each will be followed by Q&A and breakouts into groups of 6-8 to explore the subject further.

Then we will come back together in the large group and every attendee will have the opportunity of giving their reflections and takeaways for 2-3
minutes. Then we will wrap up.

Welcome to the series "Comprehensivist Wednesdays". Transdisciplinarity, Renaissance humanism, homo universalis, and Polymathy are some of the ways of describing this approach which Buckminster Fuller called Comprehensivity and described as “macro-comprehensive and micro-incisive”.
