The Standard for All Measurements: Judgment @Comprehensivist Wednesday

Details

What is the standard for all our measurements?

This exploration will examine Nobel-prizing winning physicist Percy Bridgman's operational analysis of length to reveal the essential role that judgment plays as the standard for all our measurements. Then we examine comprehensive measurement using the Measurements of Life schema in "The Design Way". The result may help us better shape our comprehensivity, our aspiration to understand it all and each other, and that, in turn, may help us better shape or design our lives.

Read my essay detailing the basic ideas: The Standard for All Measurements: Our Judgment

I further invite you to read the primary sources examined:

* The first three sections of Percy Bridgman's 1927 book "The Logic of Modern Physics" under the heading "The Operational Character of Concepts", namely "Einstein's Contribution in Changing Our Attitude Toward Concepts", "Detailed Discussion of the Concept of Length", and "The Relative Character of Knowledge".

* Chapter 6 "Interpretation and Measurement" and Chapter 8 "Judgment" in "The Design Way" by Harold G. Nelson and Erik Stolterman.

Welcome to the series "Comprehensivist Wednesdays".

Our comprehensivity is an innate-in-children but largely absent-in-schooling proclivity to comprehend the world and each other broadly and deeply. Its guiding epistemic virtue is to strive toward "the adequately macro-comprehensive and micro-incisive" (to slightly repurpose Buckminster Fuller's words).

Here is a playlist of introductory topics on comprehensive learning.
