Fareed Zakaria presented an hour-long TV documentary about President Trump's tariff program. It ran on CNN last in September, but it is now available for streaming on YouTube, the CNN website and HBO.

Zakaria's report, Big, Beautiful Tariffs, explored the history and potential economic and political consequences of these Trump policies. It also drew historical comparisons, particularly to the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of the 1930s and President William McKinley's tariffs in the late 19th century. Please watch the video becoming to the meeting; it will not be shown during the discussion. Watch it free here:

Zakaria: "Perhaps the worst part of Trumps big, beautiful tariffs is that they are a cruel false promise to bring back manufacturing jobs to America that will never return."

Some of the issues we will discuss:

  • Cost to American consumers: Zakaria argues that the tariffs will likely increase prices on everyday goods like food and clothes, effectively serving as a tax on American consumers.
  • Geopolitical impact: Zakaria says, "The broadest effect of these tariffs will be to change the basic structure of the world economy." Zakaria asserts that these policies alienate U.S. allies and push key nations toward China, calling it "the greatest own goal in modern foreign policy."
  • Increased corruption: Zakaria has warned that the tariffs create opportunities for corruption, as companies will seek special deals and exemptions.
  • Destabilizing effects: Concerns about the economic uncertainty caused by the tariffs.
