Comprehensivist Wednesdays: Author of Yourself, Written by Others
Details
In this meetup, we will work through a tour of philosophy that turns out to be an argument in disguise. Our starting point is Sam Vaknin's run through the canon, from Socrates to Chomsky, where each famous line becomes practical advice for building a self, then gets flipped. Aristotle says excellence is a habit, so malice is a habit too. Nietzsche says what does not kill us makes us stronger, so what does kill us makes us weaker, and we should choose our challenges carefully instead of treating every risk as growth. Lao Tzu says the journey begins with one step, advice for anyone who has looked at everything they owe the world and done none of it. Our conversation focuses on the tension this leaves open. Half the tradition tells you to break free: Rousseau's chains, Camus saying that living freely in an unfree world is itself rebellion, Beauvoir warning that society will build you if you do not build yourself. The other half says a self built alone is not a self. Levinas points to the face of the other person, Habermas to the public sphere, and the claim is that we become who we are through other people.

Questions To Think About:
- If a relationship shapes who you are, how can you tell when it is holding you back?
- If other people shape what we want, how do we know when a relationship is stopping us from getting what we truly want?
- What is the difference between a relationship that holds you back and one that holds you to a higher standard?

Welcome to the series "Comprehensivist Wednesdays." Transdisciplinarity, Renaissance humanism, homo universalis, and Polymathy are some of the ways of describing this approach which Buckminster Fuller called Comprehensivity and described as “macro-comprehensive and micro-incisive.”
